Outside the 219: Places to Stay for a Weekend Getaway

Looking for a change of scenery? Break up the monotony of your work week by hitting the road and spending the weekend exploring some our neighboring states.  Northwest Indiana is fortunate in it's geographic location that travel is easily accessible with a major airport  just a car ride away.  But not all getaways require a plane ticket and there are some equally great and alluring destinations close enough to weekend away and still get you back to work on Monday.   No matter your taste- we've rounded up some worthy places to unwind and they're all within driving distance from Northwest Indiana.  So make a playlist, grab your favorite road trip snacks and hit the road to some of our favorite spots outside the 219!

Farrand Hall

Colon, MI

This pre civil war house sits on 12 sprawling acres in the midst of Amish country in southwest Michigan.  The house itself features 4 gorgeously designed bedrooms, a parlor, white picket fenced yard and a pond.  The ideal location to relax, hole up in front of the fireplace and enjoy a really good book. What to do: Explore the magic capital of the world with a stop at Abbott's Magic Co., rent a pontoon on Palmer Lake and finish off with breakfast at Dawn's Cafe.

Cottage on Whidbey

New Buffalo, MI

Since New Buffalo is the first exit across the Michigan border, it's perfect for a spontaneous stop for NWI residents.  This charming cottage sleeps up to 12 and offers community bikes to take into the heart of town which is just 2 blocks away!  Enjoy one of the region's largest beaches and harbors along with easy access to the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail.

What to do: Hit the tables at Four Winds Casino, grab a bite at the iconic Stray Dog Bar & Grill, Bentwood Tavern and enjoy the patio at Beer Church Brewing.

Valparaiso Inn Bed & Breakfast

Valparaiso, IN

Located just a few blocks from downtown Valparaiso on the historic Washington Street District, this circa 1900 home has been renovated into a B&B perfect for a low-key weekend. Complete with a grand living room,  parlor,  solarium, and screen porch with a barrel ceiling, the inn keepers did a spectacular job updating the home while maintaining the character of original architecture.   Guests can relax in one of their 5 suites, soak in the hot-tub,  and awaken to fresh baked goods in the morning before heading to Lincolnway to enjoy the best of what town has to offer.

The Publishing House B&B

Chicago, IL

A short drive down 94 will get you to one of Chicago's most walkable neighborhoods, the West Loop.  This former Free Methodist Publishing House was built in 1909 and reimagined as a B&B in 2017.  With 11 rooms uniquely styled to suit any guest and in the ideal location to explore the city by foot, this is the perfect spot to enjoy the best of what Chicago has to offer.

What to do:  Check out the mask bar or yoga flow at Scratch Goods, get your BBQ fix at Green Street Smoked Meats and enjoy the rooftop views at Ballast Point.

The Siren Hotel

Detroit, MI

This chic downtown hotel has it all, including the ideal location to see all of what Detroit has to offer.  Located within walking distance to both Comerica Field and Ford Field, it's super easy to catch a game and try the iconic coney dog after.  With rooms gorgeously styled, it's my pick for a romantic getaway, complete with a swanky coffee bar and cocktail lounge straight out of a scene from Mad Men.

What to do: Stop for brunch at Gold Cash Gold, sip cocktails at Sugarhouse Bar, explore The Belt Alley.

Barn of Three Oaks

Three Oaks, MI

Situated between Three Oaks and New Buffalo, this gorgeous 3-bedroom rental is perfect for a group and gives you access to everything Harbor Country has to offer: Fabulous restaurants, amazing distilleries, wineries and breweries, boutique shopping, all within a quick drive to Lake Michigan.

What to do:  Treasure hunt at Trilogy Antiques, catch a show at Acorn Theatre and pop next door for brunch at Journeyman Distillery

Flamingo Ranch

Lakeside, MI

Outfitted by interior designers Steve + Filip, the artistic elements in this property really shine and set the tone for a true vacay aesthetic. This secluded spot is only 1/2 mile (15 minute walk or 5 minutes on bike) to the Pier Street Beach and in the heart of everything happening in Harbor Country.

What to do:  Take a hike at Warren Dunes State Park, grab a beer at Greenbush Brewing or go antiquing along the Red Arrow Highway.

Starved Rock Lodge

Oglesby, IL

Starved Rock State Park is an ideal spot to enjoy the outdoors with over a dozen sandstone canyons and waterfalls.  In all seasons, hiking is fantastic and the lodge is the best place to relax afterwards.

What to do: Hike through Starved Rock State Park, listen to live music on the patio at Back Door Lounge or sip on waterfront cocktails at Red Dog Grill.

Brewery Lodge

Michigan City, IN

The Brewery Lodge is a boutique hotel situated on a 40 acre wooded property just a short drive away from Lake Michigan. The updated 1930 main house features both a restaurant and craft beer/wine lounge (open to the public) plus they offer brewery tours of the local neighborhood breweries.

What to do:  Check out the casino and the spa at Blue Chip Casino, hit up Washington Street Beach, grab a bite at Fish Camp or a brew at Shoreline Brewery.
